Olive oil shampoo: does it actually work for hair?

Olive oil shampoo has become one of the more searched terms in natural haircare — but a lot of what you find online is vague. “Nourishes from root to tip.” “Restores shine naturally.” What does any of that actually mean?

Here is a straightforward look at what olive oil shampoo does, what is in ours, and whether it is worth switching to.

What does olive oil do in a shampoo?

In a rinse-off product like shampoo, olive oil (Olea Europaea Fruit Oil) acts primarily as a conditioning agent. It is added to the formula to counterbalance the cleansing surfactants — the ingredients that actually remove dirt and oil from your scalp — which can leave hair feeling dry or stripped if used alone.

The oleic acid in olive oil is structurally similar to the lipids in your hair's outer layer. This means it can integrate with the hair surface and leave it feeling smoother after rinsing, rather than rough or tangled.

Olive oil will not dramatically transform your hair in a single wash. But used consistently, a shampoo that includes it as part of a well-formulated conditioning system can make a real difference to how your hair feels day to day.

What is in the Olive & Foam Shampoo?

Our Shampoo is formulated with the following key ingredients:

  • Olea Europaea Fruit Oil — Palestinian olive oil, for conditioning and smoothness
  • Polyquaternium-7 — a conditioning polymer that helps detangle hair, reduce frizz, and improve combability after washing
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine — a mild surfactant that cleanses gently while contributing to the conditioning effect
  • Coconut Diethanolamide — a foam booster that also helps with lather texture
  • Citric Acid — balances the formula's pH to be appropriate for hair and scalp

The Polyquaternium-7 is worth highlighting. It is a positively charged polymer that deposits onto negatively charged hair strands during washing and stays there after rinsing — which is what gives hair its smooth, manageable feel. Combined with the olive oil, it creates a wash that genuinely conditions as it cleans.

Does olive oil shampoo help with hair growth?

This is the question people most often search for, so let us be direct: shampoo does not stimulate hair growth. Hair growth is determined primarily by genetics, health, and scalp condition — not by what you wash with.

What a good shampoo can do is support a healthy scalp environment by cleansing without over-stripping, and reduce breakage by leaving hair in better condition between washes. Healthier hair that breaks less will appear to grow faster over time — but the shampoo is not accelerating growth, it is reducing loss.

If your hair has been feeling brittle, dry, or prone to breakage, switching to a shampoo with a better conditioning profile may make a visible difference within a few weeks.

How to use it for best results

Apply to wet hair and work from roots to ends. Massage into the scalp, then work the lather through the lengths. Rinse thoroughly.

For noticeably smoother, more manageable hair, follow with the Olive & Foam Conditioner — which adds a second conditioning layer with Glycerin, Cetostearyl Alcohol, and Cetyl Alcohol to further soften and detangle. Both are available together in the Shower Set.

Why Palestinian olive oil?

The olive oil in our shampoo is sourced from Palestine, where olive cultivation has been a central part of life and culture for thousands of years. Every bottle supports the olive grove owners who grow and press the oil. You can read more about our work with Palestinian farmers here.
